Sex-based abortions

Swedish women will be permitted to abort their children based on the sex of the fetus, according to a ruling by Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare.

The ruling was spurred by a request from Kai Wedenberg, head of the clinic where a woman twice requested, and received, an abortion based on sex.

AUSTIN, Texas  —  A judge has granted a mother’s request to have someone harvest sperm from her dead son’s body, so she can have the option of carrying out his wish to have children.

Nikolas Colton Evans, 21, died Sunday at a hospital after being punched and falling outside an Austin bar March 27.

His mother, Marissa Evans, told the Austin American-Statesman newspaper that he wanted to have three sons someday and had even picked out their names: Hunter, Tod and Van.

“I want him to live on. I want to keep a piece of him,” she told the newspaper.

Travis County Probate Judge Guy Herman ruled Monday in an emergency hearing requested by the mother, because of the urgency of collecting the sperm intact.

Court documents said the sperm had to be collected within 24 hours of Nikolas Evans being removed from life support unless the body was cooled to no more than 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit (4 Celsius).

Because of my experience going to Cameroon, first written about here in 2006, to infect myself with hookworm to deal with my allergies and asthma, and because of my role as the founder of the world’s first company offering infection with human hookworm and whipworm to the public, I was approached by a documentary film maker a while ago. I agreed to be filmed but quickly became unhappy with the direction they were taking. They were more interested in our personal lives and an Oprah-like approach to the story than in the science or the implications for the practice of medicine. To try and persuade them to do a movie I was interested in watching, and that I was willing to continue to participate in filming, I wrote the following, believing that doing so would compel them to take a different approach. Who would not prefer to make the first documentary about something historic? I am still waiting for their response but it occurred to me that what I had written was a nice summation of my perspective on what I have learned since I started down this path and of my thinking about this approach to medicine.

A couple is suing a Montreal hospital, saying they were pressured into a decision by its ethics committee to put their child back on life support.

“It is totally unacceptable.… Those people have imposed their view of the treatment to the parents,” said Jean-Pierre Ménard, the lawyer representing Marie-Ève Laurendeau and Stéphane Mantha.

Ménard said the parents were not obliged to comply with the decision of the Montreal Children’s Hospital ethics committee and it has no power to force them to accept their recommendation.
